Today, I thought I would share the humorous side of being a rubber stamp manufacturer. In order to manufacture high quality rubber stamps, you need to start off with high quality raw rubber. Raw rubber has a life span and is very sensitive to heat, cold and humidity. Well, operating a business in the beautiful state of Wisconsin means that you never know when you will wake up and it will be 70 degrees in November or snowing in October. It's a little unpredictable to say the least.
We were nearing the end of a roll of rubber, (I can't believe how fast we go through this stuff,) and sometimes the end of the roll doesn't like to play nice. Sometimes, we'll pull the rubber mat the of the vulcanizer and it will be all curled up. (It looks kinda' funny.)
But the funniest thing to me is how hard it is to vulcanize chunky stamps if the weather isn't just perfect. The other night, we were doing a run of the Autism Stamp set, "Love you to Pieces" and this is what kept happening when we would pull the mat boards out of the vulcanizer-
That is one major head on that pimple! LOL!
Obviously we can't sell these stamp sets and they end up in the trash. But I thought you would get a kick out of seeing it just the same!
Looks like my puzzle pieces needs some Jessica Simpson Pro-active skin care stuff!

I totally agree with above posters. Don't trash the whole sheet or set! Cut them apart and offer the good stamps in grab bags or something... or they could be "seconds" or even blog candy. (Believe me, somebody would be tickled pink to have the leftovers!))

You're too funny! It does look just like a pimple! I have a thought -- maybe you could donate the "bad" rubber to a school or church so kids could create with them for art or service projects. That way, you wouldn't have to go through the trouble of cutting them up or anything -- just donate them as is! They could be used unmounted with a little adhesive on a clear block. Just thought I'd throw it out there...

I have to say that I love this set. Unknown to my when I bought this set last year that my son has Asperger's Syndrome which is a form of Austim. Never in a million years would I have guessed that. So this set has become ever more special to me now. The more sets you see the more donations you can make.

Auction the defective set off- all profits to the Autism foundation. Or perhaps you could offer them as blog candy or a give-away or just sell them at a reduced price. I am a subscriber to your blog, so I get your posts in my email. I read your post and immediately came over here to post and see that everyone else has said the same thing I was going to. Don't throw it away, girlfriend! You know how us stampers love some rubbah! Just put them up for sale as your Pimply Pieces set for a discounted price. You don't lose out as much, we still get our rubber and can still stamp for the cause!

Have you considered donating those imperfect stamps to perhaps a hospital where they have a craft program or to a Sick Kid's Hospital where I know they have all kinds of daily activities to help the children take their mind off their illness?
I'm sure, knowing you Gina, there is probably a good reason as to why you'd destroy sheets of rubber when they have a "break-out", but just in case, I had to add my Three-cent's worth :0)
Maybe once you're settled in the new digs and can see straight, you could do something similar to a Tutorial, where you show us how rubber stamps go from a concept//graphic drawing right through the entire process and how they turn into the product that we receive at our end of the world. Hi Gina, I totally agree with what everyone is saying - please don't just throw them away!!! I really like the ideas of donating them to a children's hospital (Brenner's maybe?) where they are there for an extended amount of time or also if you have the time and get enough defective sets with different pieces being affected maybe you can cut the bad pieces out and put the good ones together to sell - then again that might be too much work. Grab bags are also a great idea. Thanks for sharing with us!
