Sewing a corner and some Easter time candy!

When I posted my first sewing tutorial, I showed you how to sew all the way to the edge. But you can make your corners look even better if you turn your paper when you get to the corner instead of criss crossing two straight seams like I showed you in the other tutorial.

Begin with the piece of card stock you want to sew. To help make a guide, layer your card stock. I use 1/4 margins. So that means that my base is 4 X 5 1/4 and my smaller piece is 3 3/4 X 5. This whole piece will layer on a card that measures 4 1/4 X 5 1/2. (These measurements are all in inches.)

See the edge my arrow is pointing to? That will be the exact spot the my presser foot will lean on and stay there the whole time I am sewing. That will be my guide to help keep things even.

For this project, I have chosen stitch style C so my stitch dial looks like this. (see above)

Here is a clearer example of how my presser foot is using the black edge as a guide. See how the edge of the presser foot is right on the edge of the black piece of card stock?

This view shows you how far in my needle is for starting the stitches. This is a side view. You want to make sure that you don't begin at the very back, but rather start in about 1/4 of an inch on your patterned paper because we are sewing a box this time. We are not going all the way to the edge.

Now, drop your needle by turning the wheel (on the side of your machine) forward until your needle pierces through the paper and then sew a straight seam by keeping your presser foot even with the black edge. Do NOT sew all the way to the other side. Stop sewing about 1/4 inch before the end of the patterned paper.

When you reach the about 1/4 of an inch from the other side, turn your wheel (on the side of your machine) so the needle is down into the paper. Then, raise your presser foot.

Can you see how the needle is holding the card stock in the machine?

Back to the front view.

With the needle holding the card stock in the machine, grab the back of the card stock and turn it toward you 1/4 turn.

Then, drop the presser foot and do the same thing again, turning it at each corner until you've met up with your first stitch. Once you have just crossed over your first stitch, make a couple of back stitches by pressing this button down (see photo below) and stepping on the pedal again. This will lock your stitches so they don't come apart. You can trim your threads close and continue on with your project.

Here is my finished card.

And here is a different view to see the squared corner.

The same goes when you are using your zig-zag stitch. (With one exception.)

When I do square corners with my zig-zag stitch, I always make sure my needle starts and ends in the right side position.

This will create very even looking corners when you turn your card stock 1/4 turn.

I sharpened this picture as much as I could so you could get a small glimpse at the corner but it's still a little dark. But I'm sure you get the point.

The image I used for this card was too long for any of my scalloped punches and too thin for my nestabilities. So, I punched out two of the Marvy Giga scalloped rectangles and I pieced them together to make one long one.

If you squint and look really close, there is the seam where the two rectangles came together.
This stamp set is Rupa Shevde's new "Thinking of you" set. I just LOVE this topiary. And the rain dots that we have in our online store fit just perfectly inside the circles!

I love these rain dots because they come in lots of colors plus clear and you can add them at the end of your project because they are self-adhesive and there are no metal parts that have to poke through your cards.

I love your tutorials, the only downfall (from my DH's point of view, not mine of course) is that they make me 'have' to shop.
I need to add Carolyn King's Framed Flowers set to my list now.
Thank you so much, keep up the wonderful work.
