Using Nestabilites in your Cuttlebug

No matter how many times I read all the websites that have a "sandwich" recipe for the Cuttlebug, I mess it up. Call me an idiot but I need to see things first to be able to do them. I thought to myself, I must be the stupidest person around! But then, when customer after customer came back to our store after purchasing the Nestabilities having no clue how to use them in their Cuttlebugs, even after reading the sandwich recipes, I realized I wasn't alone. I thought I better do a step-by step visual tutorial. (Luckily, I learned by watching Jessica. LOL!)  For those of you who have already figured it out,  check out the end of this post for a cool new product and a Nestabilities giveaway!

To begin, you will need your Cuttlebug with all four plates.

Here's how we store the Nestabilities in our classroom at our store.

We purchased a pack of the magnetic sheets at Staples. They are super thin and one side has adhesive on it, the other side is magnetic. You can easily cut them with a paper cutter. We cut them to fit inside the tins and rounded the corners with a corner rounder punch. Then, we placed the Nesties inside.

How fun it this! It's like magic... ooooh! (  I am so easily amused.)

Here is your visual sandwich.

Begin with Plate A on the very bottom, then plate C. ("C" is for "Cutting"- not embossing.)

See how my cutting edge of my die is up? It's always going to be up- for both cutting and embossing.

Next, lay your cardstock on top of the die.

Then, lay one of your B plates on top.

Now, run it through your Cuttlebug. It's okay if it makes a crackle kind of sound. That's normal.
When you remove the B plate, this is what you'll see.

If you just want to cut, pop it out of the die and you are done. But if you want to emboss, continue one with this next step.

Remove the excess paper from the outside of the die but leave the cut piece inside the die. Switch the bottom plate from C to B and place the die with the cut piece still inside on top of plate B. Make sure it's still facing up.

Next, lay the tan embossing mat over your die.

Then, place your other plate B on top.

I add one piece of chipboard on top. You can try a few pieces of cardstock if you don't have chipboard but the chipboard works great! And no wasted cardstock.

Now, run it through your Cuttlebug. Then, pop it out of the die and it will look like this.

This picture looks pink because I shot it in the window and it cast a pinkish glow but I wanted you to see the detail so I left it darker.

Now, for something fun and new. (Again, it's not new, just new to me. And maybe you too!)

Metallic Rub-on paste is headed to the Gina K. Designs online store by the truckload! It's going to retail for only $3.99 and you get seven metallic colors!

I love this stuff. It's super easy to use and eliminates the need to layer. It really makes that embossed edge *pop* too!

Just rub a little on your finger.

Then rub it on whatever you want to accent!

I know it looks silver here. That's because I forgot to take a picture of the gold one. Then I made a silver one and snapped this step using the silver paste. (Oops.
)

Here is a close up of my finished project.

Card details:
Cardstock- Stampin' Up whisper white, K & Company mat stack
Ink- Stazon Black

So, how about some Blog Candy?
What are ya' hungry for, Nestabilities? Metallic Rub-on paste?

BOTH?

Let's have a winner and a runner up on this one.

The grand prize is a pack of Nestabilities in whatever shape you want, (and the new JUMBO rectangles are on their way to Gina K. Designs right now!)

Our runner up will win their own set of Metallic Rub-on paste! Here's what you do- leave a comment here and on Tuesday morning, I will announce our winners!

Well, off to bed. The first day of the Milwaukee show is tomorrow and I want to try to look alive!

Enjoy!
Hugs,
Gina K.

Thank You! Thank You! I'm saying it twice because I learned 2 things here.
First a great way to store my Nesties and again for showing me with PHOTOS how to cut and emboss with them and the cuttlebug!
You would not believe how many plates I have broken trying to figure this out!!!
Yes the crack is a bit unnerving during the cutting process but to hear the crack sound again during the emboss is not a good thing!!

    Hi Gina K

Thank you ever so much for this tutorial.

I have read so much on overseas blogs about Nestabilities that I wanted to buy some and at long last I have found a store in Western Australia who will order them in from the US so I have put an order in for 1 set as I was hoping I could use them in my cuttlebug (I had read one can) I now know that I can for sure and I just cannot wait to get my order.

I just think they are awesome and one can create so many different things with them, I just love reading blogs to find out what people are doing, I think I look at too many blogs and don't get enough SB, Carding making etc done for myself but being on limited funds I find I cannot afford to go to classes any more and this is one way of learning.

It will take me awhile to purchase more but I at least I know I am buying something useful. I am just so pleased that you did this tutorial as I would have had no idea as to what to do with the tan mat etc and Queensland is a long way from Western Australia to get personal help.

Just once again thanks for sharing your expertise I am just so grateful to all the bloggers who are willing to share their knowledge so willingly and for free. It would be like a fairy tale come true to win some Nestabilities etc.
    Many thanks.
    Kendell, Qld Australia
    P.S.
I love the way you have stored them in the tins thanks for this information also, are they special tins etc?

I really thought that with all of the punches I have I could (dare I say it?) Love the tin storage, love the tutorial, love the rubbed "pop" you gave it with the shimmer. . . You are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Ooh, good idea on the chipboard! I was using a few pieces of scrap cardstock between my A and B plates when I was embossing. The chipboard looks like a much better idea! I think I'll go cut some to match the size of my plates.
