Koh-i-noor pencil tutorial, Paper piercing tutorial and Ultra clean!

I know I have been talking about Koh-i-noor pencils for months. Alicia and I demonstrated them all weekend at the St. Paul show a couple of weeks ago. We sell them in our retail store and we've used them in a couple of our odorless mineral spirits classes with rave reviews.

I think one of the big questions is "do I love them more than my Prismacolor pencils?" The short answer is no, not more, just differently and for different reasons. LOL! Prismacolor pencils will always be a fabulous coloring tool and I will always love mine. I love the large variety of color choices you get with Prismacolor pencils however, I am also learning to mix my coloring tools together and mix my colors to create new colors so color variety is becoming less of an issue for me.

Let me explain to you some of the things that I love about Koh-i-noor pencils.

Quality
First of all, they are pure color- no wood. They feel really great in your hand. They sharpen really well. I have trouble with my Prismacolor pencils breaking when I sharpen them. That's because some of the leads are broken on the inside. If a Koh-i -noor pencil lead is broken, you know it because the whole pencil is broken. (They are easy to break if you drop them but otherwise, they are pretty tough. I dropped one off of my table and it broke but it still works just fine.)

Texture
The texture is unlike anything I've ever felt before. I have Stampin' Up pure color pencils, Stampin' Up metallic pencils, Prismacolor pencils, EK success pencils, Lowell-Cornell pencils, Crayola pencils and RoseArt pencils. Koh-i-noor pencils are the most buttery smooth pencils I've ever used. They almost seem like they are part pastel, part pencil.

Price
They come in a pack of 24 pencils for only $15.95. That's a great price for the quality you get and they come in a neat little box with two drawers that pull out. It's easy and convenient to throw them in your travel bag for quick coloring on the go. (The 24 pack is the largest size they make as of now.)

Vibrant Color
In the example below, I colored the same image with a Prismacolor Pencil and a Koh-i-noor pencil. I tried to find colors that were very close and I chose blue because blue tends to be a stubborn color to blend with OMS and it's hard to keep it vibrant.

Then, using the Gina K. Designs artist grade odorless mineral spirits and two separate blending stumps, I blended each of the dresses.

I noticed that the Koh-i-noor pencils blended smoother with less of a textured appearance.
Then, I added a little purple to each dress to give it some depth. Here's a close up shot of the two dresses with the purple added.

As I blended the purple, it washed out on the Prismacolor side but not as much on the Koh-i-noor side.
Prismacolor has a million great shades for skin tones but Koh-i-noor doesn't so I used my Copic Marker in 'skin pink' to color the skin.

Do you like the piercing? I first found out about this technique from Melanie Muenchinger and Sharon Harnist. They learned all about it from Jody Morrow. Once I tried it, I knew you would all love it so I decided that we would bring it into the store. (Check out Melanie's blog for another sample of this technique.)

Here's how it works.
The piercing is done with a new template product that we have added to the store. We're calling it our "paper piercing templates-3 pack." I know they have other names but we've purchased them in bulk in three different shapes- a circle, a star and a square. When you purchase them in our store, you get all three shapes in one pack.

All you have to do is place the plastic paper piercing template over what you want to pierce and pick a row.

As you begin to pierce, choose the same spot in each box to pierce your holes. For example, I used the upper right hand corner of each box. This makes my pierced circle pretty even.

I decided to try it with the square template too.

The piercing adds such a nice touch to your projects.

Here is an up close photo of the piercing and coloring. (I blended two Koh-i-noor colors to get the color of her dress.)

Details- Patterned Paper by DCWV 'Once upon a time,' Fibers by Basic Grey, Nestabilities, Stamp set- 'Heartfelt Hits' and 'Sandy Claws,' SU whisper white card stock, Koh-i-noor pencils, Gina K. Designs OMS and blending stumps, stickles, Prism Prismatics cardstock, Copic marker for skin.

Okay, one more quick show and tell.

Look at this stamp!

(Do you have any this bad?)

Yuck! I wanted to use this greeting on my card. It's supposed to say Celebrate the Moment but it was totally encrusted in black Stazon Ink since the last time it was used. (That was in December when we did a make and take thing for Christmas!) So, it's been like that for about six 6 months!

I couldn't even use the stamp because the rubber was hard as a rock. It wasn't even flexible anymore because of all that dried up gunky ink.

I pulled out my Ultraclean stamp cleaner and sprayed some on my clean up pad. (Yeah, I know, the pad is dirty too!) Then, I sat my stamp on it for about a minute or two to allow the cleaner to break down the crust.

Then, I scrubbed...and look!

I love Ultraclean. It never lets me down!

Hope you enjoyed these tutorials!
Have a wonderful spring weekend!
Hugs,
Gina K.

Great article, Gina! I love the Prisma's but your examples have really made me curious and excited about using the Kon-i-noor's. The price is right, so I think a set is in my future on way or the other!

I agree; I'm head-over-heels in love with my Ultra Cleaner! My scrubber pad looks even worse than yours, though! Drives me nuts, too, lol!

I rinse mine out about once a week and it stays pretty clean (even though it looks filthy!) The key (for me), is to use just a tiny bit of Ultra Clean ... a little goes a l-o-n-g way and then I'm not rinsing so much down my drain once a week either!

Once again, thanks for all the information AND inspiration!!

Gina: thanks for the info about the Koh-i-noor pencils. I love the deep coloring. Perhaps we do not need to give up the prismacolors, but add to them when needed. ALso you won't believe this, I found some plastic canvas at my job and thought it could be used for paper piercing by my clients who are mentally ill. You just confirmed for me that it is possible. Thanks also for the tip about ultraclean! You are a great teacher. Boy, this a l--o--n--g comment!

I just love your card and your tutorial was so easy to follow. Count me in on this sweet candy. The Kohinoor pencils looks and sounds so awesome. The Plastic canvas is such a creative idea. It will cover the whole project and you don't have to match up the holes since it fits the whol project. Ok I'm one of those that some of my stamps looks that bad, so I for sure need that stamp cleaner. Count me in on this FUN candy. I would love to be that lucky stamper to have a chance to play with this. Thanks for a chance.

The colors, on my monitor were amazing with the new pencils - esp the blue like you said. You are so amazing with your coloring anyway! I can't believe the difference in your stamp. I have some of the cleaner but must not leave it on long enough or scrub as good. Good to know. We learn so much from you and your blog. Thanks so much for your inspiration as well.

We love to share but want it all so that works for us. I over heard you tell someone there that you could erase these pencils before you blend is that true? I have not tried the ultra clean but will definitely get some now. I am very particular about cleaning my stamps and don't even like to loan them out because nobody keeps them as clean as I want them to be. Thanks for your continued inspiration!

I would love to purchase them but sadly shipping from an online store from the US to CANADA is insane, even the smallest $1.49 item has a HUGH shipping price added to it. PLEASE PICK ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually I just want the paper piecing 3 piece set, someone else can have the rest.

I am fairly new to your site, but am loving what I see. Love the look of the Koh-i-noor pencils and would love to try them out! I tend to use to SU watercolour crayons, but am still learning how to blend and get the look I want. Have not heard of Ultraclean before and would love to know where I can get some.
