Koh-i-noor pencil tutorial (and some blog candy too)

For those of you who are already colored pencil pros, you will immediately feel the difference when you use Koh-i-noor pencils for the first time. You will find them to be extra creamy and it will take less color to create more vibrance, especially in some of those harder to use colors like yellow, blue and purple.

But if you are just getting into the colored pencil technique, you may need a little help to create vibrant colored pencil focal images.

When you first open your Koh-i-noor pencils, you might think that there is not enough colors to create what you want. Koh-i-noor is lacking on a few important colors, mostly skin tones, however, unless you're coloring lots of people, you will find that you have all you need right here. (And, you can always purchase a few open stock prismacolor pencils in skin tones to round out your collection.) If you already have a set of Prismacolor Pencils like I do, I still think that the Koh-i-noor pencils are a great investment because the blues, yellow, purples and greens seem to be more blendable than I've experienced in other brands.

We went camping this weekend and had some very stormy weather. Alicia drew and I stamped. I didn't want to bring much with me so I brought two sets of stamps, Stazon ink, some SU whisper white card stock, my Koh-i-noors, blending stumps and OMS. I figured that I could color all weekend and then assemble cards when I got back. I didn't feel like I was missing any colors at all with my little 24 pack of Koh-i-noors by my side.

I began by stamping an image of my little crab from my "Just Be-claws" stamp set. I used Stazon black ink. Then, I used a pinkish red pencil #8750/10 and colored just the perimeter of the area I wanted to shade.

If this in the first time you are using a blending stump, it's a good idea to prep the stump before you use it. Take a nail file and run it over the top of the stump. Run the file around the point of the stump as well. This allows the blending stump to absorb more odorless mineral spirits and gives it a better blending ability. Also, make sure you are using the right blending stumps. I can't tell you how many times when I am doing shows that people tell me that they have good stumps at home. Then, I let them try mine and they are FLOORED at the difference. Make sure you have good stumps or you will not get a good result.

Dip your prepared stump into the OMS and let it absorb a little first. Then, using a circular motion, move the color from the edge toward the center to create depth.

See the way the color gets lighter toward the center? Look at his mouth- it's a much lighter color than under his eyes. This creates depth.

Here is the crab with the first colored finished.

The next step to adding more depth is to add a second color to the crab. I chose a hot orange color, #8750/9. Again, I colored the perimeter of the area I wanted to shade.

Then, I blended the hot orange into the pinkish red.

Now, he appears to be more "cooked" looking. LOL! Isn't that combination so vibrant?

Next, I added some ground underneath him. I used two browns, #8750/11 and #8750/23. The #23 is darker and I added it just under his claws to give it a little bit of a shadowed look.

Then, I blended them together using a circular motion.

Here is the blended ground.

Next, I added some sky. I used two colors for the sky. First, I colored with blue, #8750/17 and then added a little light pink #8750/14.

It's always a good idea to use more than one color when doing things like the sky or ground. In nature, those things are always very colorful. Even though we say the sky is blue, it always has more colors in it in real life.

I blended the sky using my circular motion.

Then, I added one more pink to the sky, #8750/16. It's more of a plum pink.

I blended the darker pink and then added a little more ground to the picture. This is my finished image.

Now, her is ready to be added to a card. (I didn't have any supplies with me to actually make a card so I stopped there.

I will share the full card with you when I announce the winner of my blog candy contest.

What am I giving away? Well, how about another pack of Koh-i-noor pencils? Oh, and let's add some odorless mineral spirits and blending stumps to the prize too!

We just received a couple million extra boxes in our store. (Yeah, I know, I exaggerate a little at times. LOL) I think we'll need them all to fill all of your orders coming in! But, I think we can pull one aside to give away. And don't worry if you already have a pack. I love having my little to-go bag ready at all times. There's nothing wrong with having a spare pack of these babies laying around.

So, leave a comment here. I will randomly choose a name and announce the winner of these fabulous Koh-noor pencils, stumps and OMS sometime on Tuesday!

I hope you found this tutorial informative. Have a great day!

Hugs,
Gina K.

The Koh-i-Noor pencils are incredibly vibrant. I seem to have collected so many different types over the years, from soft pastels, to watercolor pencils and crayons, however, these seem to be the most vibrant colors around. I've looked for them locally, and they can't be found. The tutorial only makes me want them more. I'm dreaming of the possibilities that can be attained with them....thanks for sharing the chance to own them...Patti

I bought the 24 set of KOH-I-NOOR COLORED WOODLESS PENCILS. I do not see any description of the pencils. There is a number but they do not say what color the pencils are. This would help as I am new to this medium. I am a watercolor painter. Thank you so much

Hi! I think your article is wonderful and really helpful. I've been using children's colored pencils and I think I'd want to start with artist grade colored pencils. I'm not an art student but I love drawing so I'm thinking of improving myself despite of having no formal art training whatsoever. Another article I read it's good to start with Koh-i-noor. Using the children's colored pencils has made me frustrated in blending colors or creating that smooth texture. I'm thinking of jumping into Prismacolors but I think it would be great to start with Koh-i-noor first, especially that as you say, it is blendable and gives smoother texture than Prismacolors. Thanks again for this tutorial!
