Trees

I am overwhelmed by your thoughts and prayers for my Dad and our family. Those prayers are so important to us and are greatly appreciated.

I sat with my Dad for quite a while today. Through his tears of sadness, he told me that his Mom comes to visit him. (Of course Grandmom passed away over 50 years ago.) He told me that she said she's waiting for him. I can tell he's scared. It's so hard to see the man who I would run to when I was a scared little girl, now feeling so scared and so much like a child himself. It's a helpless feeling. It sure puts a lot of things that I was worried about in their proper perspective.

Again, I appreciate your prayers and your friendship. It means so much.

On a happier note, we do have a nestabilities winner!! Congratulations goes out to:

.  .  .  .  .

I want to leave you with a thought tonight. It's actually a little story a friend sent me. (Thanks Ann, everything you send me is right on time.) I've added my latest card sample to the story.

Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, 'Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty.'

Then the second tree said, 'Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take Kings and Queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull.'

Finally the third tree said, 'I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches. They will think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me .'

After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, 'This looks like a strong tree. I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter.' He began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest.

At the second tree the woodsman said, 'This looks like a strong tree. I should be able to sell it to the shipyard.' The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship.

When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, 'I don't need anything special from my tree, I'll just take this one,' and he cut it down.

When the first tree was sold to the carpenter, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for.

The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end.

The third tree was cut into large pieces, and left alone in the dark.

The years went by and the trees forgot about their dreams.

Then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time.

Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn't think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and He stood and said 'Peace' and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat.

Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it.

The moral of this story is that when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, God will give you great gifts.

Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined.

We don't always know what God's plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best.

Hugs,
Gina K.

Thank you for tonight's entry. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. The story really hits home to me because my husband and I are waiting on the date to go into the hospital for a donor stem cell transplant in a couple weeks. The risks are great but we have to believe that God is in control and has a plan. Thanks for the re-enforcement through the story.

This sounds like the story in the book titled The Tale of Three Trees - we have that one in our personal family library/ collection.

I was thinking from your first post today about Ben's Olympic competitions that you shared this past Summer. And I wondered if he would find some little bit of comfort knowing his current trial, however long it last, will surely win him the gold medal of Heaven. The one, true prize we all long for. Again - my love and prayers are with your father Ben, as well as all of your family. Peace and comfort in our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Hi Gina,

I am also sitting with my elderly relative over this holiday, I know the "pull" which is especially hard during the holiday season.

God, in His wisdom, knows that by giving us the time to sit, care for, worry about, and nurse our loved ones, is preparation to release them.

It also becomes a place of referrance for us to return to when our loved ones are finally back home with Him.

You are in my prayers, my friend.

I remember when my grandmother was laying in the hospital. She looked up and said, Jack...why are you here? My grandfather had been gone a number of years at that time. She turned to me and held my hand, and told me she loved me, but couldn't go. I looked at my mom, (her daughter), my uncle (her son) and my aunt (her youngest daughter) and said, we need to tell her it's ok. We need to let her know that "Jack" my grandfather is waiting for her and that it really is ok. We had been holding our breaths for 48 hours at this point.
Yet, those words, seemed to be what she needed. Within an hour of us saying..."its Ok", she was gone. It was one of the hardest moments of my life. She wasn't just my grandmother, she was my friend. I came to realize love isn't just about holding on...but about letting go too.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Gina, I lost my father what seems only yesterday, but was actually 6 years ago. Taking care of him while he was sick was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It is a daughters worse nightmare watching a parent being ill or suffer. I want to lend you a bible verse that I hug onto with dear life during that time. It's Isiah 26:4 "Trust ye in the Lord forever, for the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength". That verse put everything in perspective. The Lord is bigger than any of our struggles. I held him to that promise, believe you me! I hope that promise comforts you also.
Wishing you and your family God's blessings,

A man, after being told there was nothing more they could do, asked the doctor what would happen after he died. The doctor replied "I don't know." The man was surprised that he, a Christian, didn't know. The doctor answered this, as he let his dog into the room. "You heard my dog wanting in. He's never been in this room before but wasn't afraid to come in because he knew his master was here, and that was all he needed to know. So, he came in joyfully. That's what will happen. We have never been there before, but we know our Master is there to welcome us, and that's all we need to know."

I love this story of the 3 trees. I bought this book a few years back at Christmas time for our boys. We read it every year.

I'm so sorry that your dad isn't doing well. It's really hard to watch someone you love suffer. My daughter has been very ill her whole life (20 yrs) and is terminally ill.. we've almost lost her several times... then out of the blue, two years ago my nephew was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He fought a valiant fight but last month he accepted his calling from his Father and went "home". He got very sick very fast after the cancer relapsed and we all knew he was dying. My nephew (age 17) taught us so much. He has blessed our lives and those around him beyond measure.

Thank you for the story about the 3 trees. It made me think of my own daughter and my nephew. God knows us and loves us. My life is not at all what I ever would have expected... nor would have wished... but I have been blessed beyond measure to care for such a special family.

I hope you have some good moments with your dad and that you cherish every one.

    ((hugs))

thank you for that wonderful story. I am going to have to remember that to convey to my children. My prayers go out to you and your family. I know what you are going through...I lost my mom 1 1/2 years ago. I never got to say good bye...she was in a coma when I got there. Miss her every single day...but I am so grateful to have had her as long as I did.

One day you will be so glad that you had this time with your dad...I wish I had that time with my mom...there was so much I wanted to say but never got to.

    God bless all of you.

    Dear Gina,
I'm so sorry to hear about your dad but I am so glad you are spending time with him. My dad died when I was only 19 and his last night here with us (didn't know it at the time) I fed him his dinner (as he did for me when I was a child). It was so painful and yet he was so grateful for my help. He hugged me and told me how much he loved me - and he passed later that night. I am SO glad I spent the time with him and had those open and honest conversations with him. He had shared his fear with me even though I was young. I can only believe I was a comfort to him as I know you are to your dad. Hang in there - know that you, your dad and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for the lovely tree story too.
    HUGS,
    Pam

Hi Gina--you're so in my thoughts, even though we're miles apart. It'll be 3 yr. Dec.23 my mom passed away. People stare at me when I tell them it was thee best Xmas ever. As she drifted in & out of consciousness, my great husband & husky sat with me,as I read the Xmas story (this being her favorite)
in a dimmly lit room, a snow storm outside. God works misteriously; he helped us make the 7 hr. drive to the hospital, where my mom was. I shall never forget Christmas 2003. God bless you & your family, as you have no idea how much love you're giving to your dad, as he needs all this from you. Your're an Angel, in disguise. All the best, as we reach this season of celebration. Love & prayers, from me to you. (A Canadian keeping in touch)

I just found your blog and read about you sitting with your Dad .. the experience brought tears to my eyes as the exact same thing happened to me while I sat with my Mom a few years back except it was Daddy (mine deceased for many years at that time) that visited mom. I know you'll treasure these precious moments and remember them always. Sending you blessings and love from a new scrapping friend.

Thank you for sharing that beautiful story. It reminds me that God can use me no matter how "unimportant" I may be. I know it is your faith that is getting you through these tough times. My dad is approaching 80 and it is so hard for me to see him as an "old man". My heart hurts for you.
