A personal message
Last night my Dad lost his long battle with cancer and heart disease. He was at the Hospice Care Facility here in Madison, where he was cared for by real angels on earth.

The night before, I was able to spend the entire night with him. I lay in the bed with him, with my head on his chest. I rubbed his head and arm all night and with every struggled breath, I told him I was here and I that I loved him.
Yesterday, the doctor told us that he thought my Dad would live for one more day. My mom, husband and sister encouraged me to head back home for a quick check on the girls. I ran home, checked the girls and came back. I arrived back to his room at 5:02 and he has passed away just two minutes prior at 5:00 PM. I was heartbroken.
But the Hospice nurse hugged me and she said, "Gina, you were his little girl. He was waiting until you were gone to die. He didn't want you to have to see that." I find some comfort in her words. I know my Dad hated to see me upset.
My Dad had become blind 4 years ago and he was almost deaf. He was completely cut off from everything and everyone he loved. He suffered from severe depression from his blindness because, like most of us, he had always found great joy in crafting, reading and watching sports. (His craft was lamp making and he made almost all of the lamps in my home. He loved to work with his hands.)
He had a sense of humor that was second to none. He made his living as a comedian and, although he hadn't laughed much in the last four years, he certainly helped millions of people over the years through his comedy. As the saying goes, "Laughter is the best medicine." He knew that and loved what he did.
Although I am devastated by my loss, I find great joy in knowing that his suffering is over. Yesterday at 5:00 PM, my Dad's eyes were finally opened, his ears could finally hear again. His body was young and strong, just like that medal winning Olympic gymnast he was all those years ago. He found comfort in his Mother, Father, baby daughter and all of those who had gone before him and he was enveloped in the arms of Christ.
Thanks for letting me share this with you. And thank you so much for all of your prayers, thoughts, concerns and well wishes. My family and I have found great comfort in that.
With love,
Gina

How wonderful that you have the assurance that your Dad IS "renewed" and with his Savior for eternity! It was a great blessing for me to know that the same was true for my husband when he died. Now we live on, enjoying (and at times reliving) the thousands of memories we have of our times spent with them here on earth. Those memories become so precious.
Love in Jesus,

Gina, as I read this with tears in my eyes I know in my heart that he is at peace. I pray for comfort and love for your family. I know you will be surrounded by loving friends and family members as you are such a special part of our world.
I lost my dad to cancer 13 years ago and it is indeed hard for them to surrender what is familiar. At the time, my dad had to have assistance with everything.
Now your dad is home, and helping Him make a "lamp" unto our feet and a light unto our path.
Hugs to you and the family~

Dear Gina, I am so sorry for the loss of your dad. Reading your message brought back so many memories of my own father who died 6 years ago. Your experience with your dad's passing was very similar to mine. Do not feel sorrowful that you were not with him when he died. My sisters and I finally had to leave his room in order for him to be able to die. It is very strange thing but the words his hospice nurse said are very true and not said just to give you comfort but I hope they do. I, like you, know that my dad whose great passion was ballroom dancing and who could not even walk the last three years of his life, danced into the arms of Jesus and is rejoicing in this new and better life. I am praying for peace and comfort for you and your family.

Although we all miss him during the holidays, it's the little things that sneak up on you. For me it has been not getting to have that race to see who gets the first tomato and not getting to call him and tell him that his grandson won the pinewood derby yesterday. Just remember that God only gives you what he knows you can handle. You will have strength when you need it.

Oh Gina,
I am so sorry for your loss. I have lost both of my parents and know how hard it is. My heart goes out to you and your family. Also, trust the words of that very special nurse. I had the same thing happen with my very special Father-in-law. We sat by his side for 2 days and were going to take my mil out for a short break. We all went in individually and spoke with him assuring him we would be back shortly and he chose to leave while we were gone. It is hard and the question still remains should I have left but I know your dad loved you and wanted to spare you. You and your family are in my

I'm glad he is now at peace after everything he's gone through for the last 4 years. When things get hard, just remember, you always carry him with you in your heart. He is always there. Take care!

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. I lost my father to lung cancer almost 11 years ago when my daughter was just 3 weeks old. Like you, I was not at his side. I honestly feel that his hospice nurse was right. He didn't want to go in front of you. My father waited for the hospice nurse because he didn't want my mother to have to handle everything on her own. I hope you find some comfort in your memories.

Gina, I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. I'm sitting here crying as I'm responding. We lost my Dad 3 years ago to cancer. He stayed at my brother's home with hospice care as needed and I took care of him for his last two weeks. Like you, on a weekend I went home to see my kids and that night he died in his sleep. Part of me felt bad about it...but part of me also believed that he waited for me not to be there. He'd already told me that taking care of him and watching him die was harder on me than it was on him. So, maybe your Dad's nurse was right. Hang in there and hold tight to the good memories.

Gina, I know how you feel. I lost my Dad last summer and he died when my sister and I left for a couple of hours. The hospice nurse (and yes they are angels)called us to tell of his death. She also said he didn't want us there when he died. He'd been at the Hospice House for 9 days. My prayers are with you

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. Jan. 29 was the 6th anniversary of my dad's passing and to this day I still remember how hard it was to get through. My dad passed away all by himself--he went to my sister's house and shoveled snow when she wasn't home and was found by a passerby--so we never got to say goodbye.
My uncle passed in November 2007. Our family spent the day at hospice with him. When we left for dinner (one of my brothers did stay with him), that is when he passed away. The hospice nurse told my cousin that he was just waiting for all of us to leave.
Hugs to you!

Gina, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know what you are going through as I lost my father 2 years ago. We (all 18 of his children & their spouses) cared for him w/Mom at his home. The last 3 months of his life at least 2 of us were with him everyday. I had gone home on the last day to get some sleep. Dreamnt that dad was standing with his arms folded over his chest in his classic stance, in a healthy body ---- with a BIG smile on his face. I awoke from this dream with the phone ringing, one of my siblings calling to say Dad had passes. I still carry that joyous picture of Dad in my heart/mind & recall it daily. Brings instant peace as he was no longer in pain or suffering. In my mind he's telling me he's joyous & to recall all the GREAT family times we had. I won't say it gets better as time passes, as the pain/emptiness is always with you, although as time passes its not 24/7. My thoughts & prayers are with you, your Mother, and family.

Gina, I know how hard it is to let go even though you know your father has gone to a better place. My dad also waited until I was away from him for a few minutes because he knew I could not let go of him...so he took that decision upon himself (as it should be) to go when he chose to go. Otherwise I must admit I am selfish and I would never have given him up.
My heart hurts for you and smiles for you at the same time if that makes any sense at all. That is because you will always feel the loss of your father and yet you will always feel a part of him with you too.
Take Care & God Bless!

He is in a better place and has shed all his worldly ailments!! I too went thru what you did, with my pop-pop! I was VERY close to him and held his hand, thru the night, while he was in Hospice. What that cargiver said to you is SO true!! My heart goes out to you in your time of sorrow and joy. Thanks again for sharing your story, it reminds me of my grandfather and that is wonderful! Gina: Please know that my heart goes out to you. I lost both my parents to cancer and have an idea what you are going through. I, too, missed by minutes the last breath my father took. While making my frantic long-distance drive to the hospital to see my father, I asked the nurses to whisper in his ear that I was on my way and that I loved him. After making the 12-hour drive non-stop, I was able to see him to tell him myself and spent a few hours with him. I stepped out briefly to get some dinner and to get a hotel room when I rec'd the dreaded phone call that his condition changed. He passed away while I was out. While this isn't an easy time for you, knowing that you were able to see him and spend that time with him the night before is a gift. God bless you and your family during this difficult time.

Dear Gina,
I am very sorry for your loss Gina. He sounded like he had a very long, exciting and happy life. The best is that he believed in God and that he is there with the loved ones that went on before.
I lost my mom 4 years ago, to colon cancer, no one new she had it and she died at the age of 84. I miss her, but am thankful she excepted the Lord as her Savior before she dies. I will see her again one day.
I know how you feel, but it will pass in time. How precious the time was to be by his side the day before and love on him. I never had that kind of relationship with my dad, and anyone who does I am glad for them. You are truly blessed to have loved your dad as you did. I know God loves me that way.
Truly Gina I know your heart is full of alot of emotions, and I also know you will be fine. God loves us and will take care of us. It's always the living who have it hard after a loved one passes. So just love on all your other close family and you will all see each other through.

Gina, these words have comforted me before:
Native American Prayer
I give you this one thought to keep-
I am with you still-I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone
I am with you still-in each new dawn.

Gina I am sorry to hear about your dad's passing but glad that you can visualize him as being young and strong without any handicaps and free of all physical disabilities because he is with our maker and perfect in every way. I am glad you got to lay with him during his last hours on earth and I think you made his heart smile. I know how it feels to loose a parent as my dad passed just before 911. He went suddenly and died while awaiting gall bladder surgery so I had talked with him on the phone the night before and remember our last words were "I love you". I have since built a pond a special place where I can go and have good vibes about him. I picture him as a beautiful butterfly free of all the problems on this earth. When ever I see a butterfly I always think it is his way of telling me he is okay and waiting for the day when we can all be together again. I hope the days ahead are light and easy for you and you remember your dad in every special way but rejoice that he too is free and without the restrictions he once lived with. God bless you and your family.

Dear sweet Gina,
I spent my father's last days with him too and he would not let go of life while I was there. He tried so hard to be strong in front of me. He was intubated and still mustered up the ability to talk somedays. I now remember the good times and not seeing him take his last breath was truly a blessing. I think of my dad struggling to get his breath and using every ounce of his strength to beg the nurses for a glass of milk, a hotdog or just to go outside for a minute and I am so grateful that it did not last any longer than it did. I was just in the drive thru on Friday and had to remove my sunglasses to see the gentleman in the truck in front of me more clearly because he seriously looked like my dad. I will always miss my Daddy and I don't know when it will hurt less for you because I am still waiting for that time to come myself. You are in my prayers.

Dear Gina, You have become a long distance friend and thus we share this sorrow with you. I too have lost my Moma and it is not only being there when they die (that is for us ) but you were there as" Daddy's little girl" doing what God wanted you to do to honor your Daddy. Now we have the job of holding his legacy in place for our children. What will they say about us when it is our turn to leave them. Will they know they had grandparents that loved and adored them and delighted in every smile they easily gave? Well I will be praying for you and all your family for the coming days. Don't stop talking about him --Know that we will be here to listen when you just want to talk. What a great community of crafters we have gathered here. God will be there just like he was for your Daddy. He welcomed him home. What a privledge to pray for you.

Gina, I'm so sorry to read about your loss. Dads are pretty special people, and in reading what you have written about your Dad he was one of the best. I believe the Hospice Nurse told you the truth; don't feel badly that you weren't there with him in his final moments...that IS what he wanted. How special that you spent the night comforting him ~ he knew that you were there
May God keep you and your family in his loving care in the days and weeks to follow. Gayle

Gina, I am so very sorry for your loss. My heart, prayers, and hugs go out to you and your family. My Mom passed in August and I now know what others go through when they lose a parent. Your Dad is smiling down on you and your children. I know that does not help take away the pain right now. We go through so many emotions in such a short period of time. It is important to take time (over a period of time) to feel your feelings..no matter what they are. I have gone the full circle..loss, despair, joy at Mom being with Jesus, missing sending her funny animal emails and holding her hand, Happiness at the thought that I WILL see her again, and the wonderful picture in my mind that she is now so very happy that she can dance and twirl and meet and greet people as they enter Heaven. My Mom hung on to see me and she was trying to be so strong in her final weeks. The morning that we knew was to be her last, we knew she did not want to leave when we were with her. Her nurse asked for us to leave the room and it was then that Mom died. Once a Mom, always a Mom.. protecting her "young" ones. It may also be that your Dad was just watching out for his little girl and know that you were in his heart to the end of his days on earth and will be all his days in heaven. I pray for comfort for you and know that we all love you. Janet in NC

So sorry to hear about your dad. I also lost my father 3 years ago. I miss him so, but like your father, he is now in heaven celebrating and worshiping our Lord. His funeral was the most wonderful service I have attended. My two brothers are ministers and my sister a missionary. We planned a worship service that talked about the legacy dad left his children, grandchildren, friends and family. It was hard to do because we all participated in the service, but one that I know dad loved as he was looking down at us from heaven. I pray that you will find peace and comfort through the days ahead as you learn to deal with this loss. And will always remember the legacy that your father left you.

Dad's are so special. My Dad was also born in 1919 and is currently living in an assisted/Alzheimer's home. He has 4 daughters of which I am the youngest. I can only imagine how much we'll miss him once he's gone as he has been the greatest Dad a girl could possibly have. And you're right, I believe he is with family that has gone on before him. He is happy and I know you will be too but it will take some time. God Bless you.

Gina,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this very difficult time. I love this poem--
In Loving Memory Of Your Dad
God looked around his garden,
And saw an empty space.
Then he looked down here on earth,
And saw your loving face.
He put his arms around you,
And lifted you to rest.
His garden must be beautiful,
Because he only picks the best
A million times we’ll miss you,
A million times we’ll cry.
If love could have saved you,
You never would have died.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a special place,
No one could ever fill
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God took you home.

My heart goes out to you and your family. I lost my mother to pancreatic cancer - we cared for her at home with the help of Angels on earth - the hospice nurses. She was in such terrible pain that her death was a wonderful release for all of us, but the hole that it left hurts so terribly. A friend of mine told me it is like a hole in a sock that needs to be darned. Gradually, you begin to throw threads across the hole, filling in with more strands as everyday life resumes its rhythms. With time, the terrible hole is gone, and the sock serves its function, but you are ALWAYS aware of the darn. It has been two years now and my darn is pretty snug, but I am always always aware. God Bless you and your family during this terrible time. I will be praying for you to find comfort and healing.

Dear Gina,
I am so saddened to hear of the loss of your dad. While I really don't know how you feel, I've been there and it isn't easy. I've known that pain. Your family is in my prayers. A wise man once wrote, "...it is only when we take the love out of life that we take the sorrow out of death..." I, like you, know that your sweet father is in a glorious place and with those who have gone before him.
My love to you and yours,
Chris

Dear Gina,
I'm so sorry that you and your family have lost your Dad. Your description of his new, strong, pain-free body is exactly what I try to remember when I think of loved ones I've lost. What a fabulous gift God gave you - a loving Father, and another gift is the assurance that he is in Heaven, happy and healthy (and probably already working on a new lamp!)
A year ago my mother was in hospice care and passed away, just moments after I had left her bedside. The hospice nurses (yes, they're angels!) told me this is very commmon. Your dad was at peace, knowing that you loved him and that you had been there with him.
Love and hugs to you and your family,
Jan M.

Gina- I'm so sorry to hear about your father. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time. I do have to tell you that what the hospice nurse said is true. Most don't want to die in front of their loved ones. In fact, the same thing happened with my Grandfather. My Mom and Grandmother didn't want to leave his side, but without even realizing it, my Grandma walked out to get a drink and my Mom went to make a phone call. In those few minutes my Grandfather passed on. Its truly amazing how things like that can work. Thank you for sharing your story and allowing me to share mine with you! May God bless you and watch over you during this difficult time.

Oh Gina... my heart breaks for you! I can barely see to type this thru my tears! I lost my Dad (will be 10 years ago on April 30th) and it's still hard to think about. I know how hard it is and I know you'll hear this 100 times, but time really does heal. No, the pain never goes away, but all the wonderful memories, things you had maybe forgotten about, will start to fill your thoughts, more and more and soon, you'll find yourself smiling when you think of your Dad instead of crying! It sounds like your Dad was an amazing man and he will be missed greatly by a lot of people. Keep your memories alive, share stories about him with your children and remember how very much you were loved. You're going to hear this a lot too, but you and your family will be in my prayers, and there is so much power in prayer! As hard as losing someone is, try to find comfort in what you said. Now he can see and hear... he's young and with friends and loved ones who have passed on before him and he will ALWAYS be watching over you! God Bless you and your family and may He give you comfort during this hard time and fill you full of precious memories!

I am so very sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. I know your mother must be devasted at losing the love of her life. And you my dear, what a very special daughter you are. You must have given him so much comfort in his last hours, I agree with the Hospice nurse, your Dad did not want you to witness his passing. Remember him with love, with pride, see him in the eyes and the laughter of your children. Know that he is always with you and always will be. God Bless all of you and may the happy memories you shared help to ease the sorrow of his loss just a little bit.
Sincerely, Elaine Allen

I had tears of sadness when I read this tribute to your dad...I've been there and I know how hard it is. When my brother was in the nursing home, I used to tell him "wait for me so I can be with you when you go to heaven" He died 3 minutes before I walked in the door. He was like my child, he had Down Syndrome and could not talk. I went to see him every day for 4 years and it killed my mentally for him to be gone...but then I remembered I was being selfish and he was in a better place...I wish you the same kind of recovery...Prayers are coming your way from me.

I am so saddened to hear of your loss. You will be in my thoughts and my prayers. Wow, to be so lucky to live 90 years with your wife and children, one day i hope to be so lucky. They say that life goes faster then you think and now that he is with our Heavenly Father, maybe that is true, but look at all the great moments that you had. And that great photo of him with the kids, how special. I will be praying for your mother, I can't imagine the grief and longing, but I hope that she and your family are comforted by God's grace and knowing that your father is in Heaven watching over you know.
God Bless you!

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. You were so blessed to be able to spend the night with him and be with him almost to the end. My mom died when I was 9. She had been in the hospital for 2 weeks before she died and back then I couldn't see her because I was under 12. I am so glad that you got so many wonderful years with your dad. He is happy now with Jesus. You will see him again some day. I am blessed to have a dad like that, too. He was there for me after my Mom died. You can find solace in knowing that he loved you very much. I believe the nurse was right about him not wanting to upset you. I pray that the next few days will go as well as can be expected for you and your family.

Dear, sweet Gina,
Thank you so much for sharing your Father with us. It is very difficult for us as humans to accept the loss of our loved ones earthly bodies. But as you stated, he is now in a much better place where he can see and hear and there will be a day in the future (hopefully very far in the future) when you will rejoin him and you two can relive all the beautiful moments you shared.
I also have a similar story regarding my beloved Mother! In this case it was my Father who had spent hours with her (begging her not to leave him). He finally decided that he would have enough time to go and get something to eat (right there at the hospital). While he was gone my Mother left this mortal earth and went to be with her loved ones from the past.
Luckily, each of us children (my brother, sister and I) were able to see her before she left us. We were all able to tell her we loved her and that it was okay for her to leave her pain and trials behind to go live with her Heavenly Father.
I am touched by your sweet story of your dear Father and pray for you to have all the beautiful memories of your days with your him (as I am sure you have scrapbooked them) to enjoy for the rest of your life. Our mortal bodies are not infinite, but our spiritual bodies will last forever and we will share eternity with all those we love again someday. I sorrow for you, but am very happy to know your Father will no longer suffer and he will be watching over you from above. Thank you for being such a beautiful person and for sharing this special occasion with us.
My prayers are with you today.

Gina...I am sending all the love and hugs I can muster. We lots my Pops 6 years ago and some days it feels like so long ago, then there are days that it feels like yesterday. He, too, suffered the final years of his life. He was the artist and woodcrafter in the family. He missed puttering in his garage. Yes, they do wait to pass away. My Pops hung on until he got to see all 3 grandchildren. Mine was the last to see him and that day he actually ate something, first time in 3 days, so we knew it was getting real close. My grandmother, his mother, did the same thing. It's like their last gift to us. God bless you and your family, He and your father will be watching over you.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. A few years ago I went to see John Edwards. He has written numerous books and helps people connect with those who have passed. He worked as a nurse in the hospital and he told us that frequently people will hold on and wait until their loved ones leave the room before they die. Otherwise, it is too difficult for them to pass when they know how difficult it will be for their loved ones to be there. I hope you find some comfort in that and i hope you are comforted by your wonderful memories of your father.

Gina, I am so very, very sorry for your loss. There are no words that can be said to adequately express the feelings. I'm sorry just doesn't do it, but it's all we can say. Knowing he's in a better place helps. He knew how
much you loved him. Knowing how much you both cared for one another is the best memory of all. Grief is a process
that takes time. Don't let anyone tell you that you're done until you feel you are. Loss is something we do not get
over...it's more like something we get used to. But there will be a time when you'll be able to remember without
the pain and tears. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Donna in FL

Dear Gina,
My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. The world is a better place because of your father's time here and I am grateful for the bits and pieces of him you have shared.
If it as consolation, my Dad is up there in heaven with the other Dads that have passed, showing your Dad around.
Many blessings to you and your family.

My heart goes out to you. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I just lost my husband to cancer 3 weeks ago and I know how hard it is to let them go but I know you have such wonderful memories some of which you have shared with us. Let those memories put a smile on your face and a song in your heart. I think that is what he would like you to do.

Dear Gina & family:
You will certainly continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. I lost my father in 2000 and my mother in 2004. I still miss them terribly. My mother was on kidney dialysis and not doing very well with it. She asked her doctor if he thought that God would be mad at her if she stopped her treatment. The doctor told her that it was still up to God as to when she died and that if God was ready for her before she began the dialysis, He would be still be ready for her now. We had one week together before she passed away. I am an only child, so I was with her all the time. I stayed in a chair by her bed in the nursing home. My grown daughter came home to be with us for a few days but had to return to work before my mother died. We had a good week (all considered). My mother would point to an elderly person and say, "Look at that poor lady. She doesn't know anyone anymore. That will never be me". She quit dialysis two days before her wedding anniversary and five days before my father's birthday. She said, "Won't it be a good surprise for your father if I come to join him for our anniversary or on his birthday?" She assured me that if I had to be away that she would never be alone. "Jesus will come to take me by the hand and God will be waiting for me", she would say. Sometimes she would say, "I don't know what is taking God so long. We aren't making much progress here". I would tell her that God still must have plans for her. She would say, "At this late date?" God did have plans for her as she touched many lives during that week. One night I was sitting by her bed and she had slipped into a coma. Her breathing became a bit labored, so I went into the hall to get the nurse. I heard the nurse coming into the room so I moved away from the bed and had my back to my mother. When the nurse came in, I heard her gasp. My mother had passed away as soon as I moved from her bedside. I, too, felt bad, but remembered what she told me. How could Jesus take her by the hand if I had still been holding it. I will always have an empty place in my heart for my parents, but I know they are together in paradise. Praise be to God! Bless you, Gina. My the Lord give you strength and comfort through this time and in the years ahead.

My sincerest sympathy, Gina, to you and your family. I said some prayers for you all this morning in church. You are right... your dad is in Heaven, free of pain and suffering and joined with loved ones that passed before him. But it doesn't mean you won't miss him terribly. His love will stay with you always, though. I still feel my mother with me every day even though it's been 15 years since she passed. And it does get easier with time. It took me about a year, but now when I think about her, it's with nothing but happy memories and no more gripping pain. I look forward to seeing her again someday in Heaven. May God bless you in this time of grieving. I truly believe He will.

Gina: I am so sorry for the death of your father - I can only image you are heart broken. Please find comfort in knowing that you gave your father the greatest gift you could by getting in bed with him and snuggling up with him. That probably brought him more joy than you could ever image.
I worked at that HospiceCare Center for about 13 years and not that it will help your grief-but know that many many people wait until all their loved ones are out of the room and are then able to take that journey over. It is very difficult for the family members to not have been there as their loved one passed away. I think that is their final gift to us as either they are very private people or they are taking that final journey much as they lived their lifes. Know that you will see your father again some day and that will be at a time when you need him the most.
Continue to surround yourself with your father's memories and be extra special good to yourself. Kadie

My mother passed away 9 years ago, just 2 weeks after I moved to Canada from Germany. Gina, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. This is one of the hardest times in your life, but know that you have one special angel looking down on your and taking care of you. I also lost my dad a couple years ago to cancer, and I know that he is always there for me - looking down and taking care of my family. I take comfort knowing that he is free of pain, suffering and he's doing everything he always wanted to do. Hugs to you and your family.

oh Gina and family...I hope this little poem helps just a little...cherish your memories, speak his name often...
A beautiful tribute on your blog and a fabulous picture!!!
Hugs to you all
Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still
Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way you always used
Put no difference into your tone
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
At the little jokes we always enjoyed together
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolute unbroken continuity
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you for an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner
All is well

My dear Gina; There are no words that can bring you comfort right now, so I won't try to ... but please allow me to leave you with two scriptures that may give you a measure of peace (this one you have heard all your life): "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4. The other is: "Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" John 11:25, 26 This lessening of grief may not happen today or even a month from now; but between God and your memories, you will be comforted in due time. Remember you have friends that love you and grieve with you.
Hugs, and Prayers,
Debi E.

sending so many hugs Gina. I can so totally relate to how you feel. the same thing happened when my mom passed away. I really believe that she didn't want us there when she passed. God Bless you!

Gina,
I am sorry for your loss, but share in your joy at your dad's resurrection. When my aunt died she waited for my mom, her older sister, to arrive (she too had been sent home, I drove her back). My cousin, my aunt, my mom and I sang "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." My son arrived just after she passed. How wonderful for you that you have such a great picture of dad with the kids -- with his hands! I noticed that picture right away and when I read of his crafting and working with his hands I realized what a blessing that picture will always be! Peace, Mary

Gina, I am so so sorry for the loss of your dad. The note you wrote on your blog is truly a testament of the love you shared.
I too share your loss as I lost my dad in September. He also waited to leave us until my sister and I had dozed off in the chairs beside his hospital bed. I really believe they want to spare us the memory of that last breath.
Take comfort in the memories of your beloved dad. He is now at peace and in the arms of his Father. My prayers are with you.

Dear Gina,
You and your family are in my prayers. I know how hard this is. My Dad sounded a lot like yours, he loved to work with his hands and although he didn't get paid to work as a comedian he certainly was! Oh and the stories he would tell!! We still laugh about them and always will.He made wooden toys for all his grandchildren..I have girls.. they got a carousel, ferris wheel, a little "throne",and several other things, a puzzle map of the USA.. they are treasures..You have your Dad's lamps which are treasures also.
My Dad loved to whistle! I find sometimes I will start to whistle and not even realize it! Do you think it is a way that they continue to communicate with us? I can also smell him sometimes..I know that he is with me..as I know your Dad will always be with you.. I sometimes wonder if he and his brother are driving St. Peter and our Lord nuts with all their practical jokes..exploding home made root beer...you know stuff like that!
...Your father is in the Lords loving embrace..He will care for him and for you and your family as well. I know that the Lord gave me solace when my father Died..I also just missed his death by 10 min. although had been with him most of that week. He was able to die at home..Oh I am sorry if I am making this worse for you..I hope not..
I pray that you feel our Lords loving embrace and His sense of Peace...you will see your Dad again...and when you do..he will have a new stage show for you! Think of all the material he can get in Heaven!
God Bless you Gina,
Mary Friederichsen

So sorry to hear of your loss. My dad died 5 years ago of a massive stroke. I agree with the nurses that the dying can pick their moment to go - our entire family had been with Dad and it looked like he was going to last another night, so everyone was sent home except me, Mum and my DH. As soon as they all went, so did he!
I know you will miss him dreadfully, but the pain of his passing will ease with time.

I am so sorry for your lose. I didn't realize your dad was sick as I have just discovered you. What you wrote brought tears to my eyes because your dad sounds just like what happened to my dad and me. He waited until I was gone and died within 2 minutes. That was 10 years ago. I can't tell you it won't contine to hurt, but I can tell you it will get easier. You will remember the good times and the laughter and your tears will be because you miss him so much. Even after 10 years have passed there is not a day I don't wish my dad was alive, but I'm truly glad he is no longer in pain and is happy in heaven. I know he watches over me and that is a comfort. You are lucky you had him so long. My prayers are with you and your family. You dad is doing just fine now.

Oh my, Gina! I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I couldn't stop bawling as I read your post as I am still crying posting this message. My heart and many hugs goes out to you and your family during this difficult time. My husband's family suffered a terrible loss as well. The daughter of a good friend of the family passed away from cancer last Thursday. So I spent all of last night making sympathy cards for the family. She leaves behind a young son and daughter and husband. She was given permission to spend her last hours at home with family. She was only in her early 40's.
Take great comfort that your dad is with our Heavenly Father and is now a spirit who will always look down on you as your guardian angel. God Bless your family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. And I totally understand your feelings. Happy because he is finally free of health problems, but sad that someone that means so much to you, will not be around to talk with, in person, although he will still hear you. And the nurse was correct, sometimes people wait to pass away until no one is there, etc. I got the call from the nursing home that my mother wasn't going to be here on Earth much longer, and by the time I was ready to leave the house-about 5 minutes later-I got the call that she was already gone. So obviously, she didn't want me to see her pass either.
Losing a parent is never easy, lean on the Lord at this time, as He is always there.

Gina: Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. My father was a crafter as well - he could make anything - and I know that's where my interest came from. When he passed away several years ago, I was on the road to my parents' house, and missed him by just minutes and my brother and nephew arrived just half an hour after from California. I know he knew I was there. When my mom passed a few years later, I had to take her off life support after my brother again arrived from CA so he wouldn't miss her, too. Mom and dad were always so cute holding hands til he passed, so I knew that he would be waiting to welcome her home. The hospital chaplain, a very kind, quiet woman, asked if she could read Psalm 121 as we said goodbye to my mom. I got on the bed with her, as well, and the greatest calm and peace of God came over me - I knew she was with her Father and my dad. I hope you can read and take comfort in that Psalm, as well. God bless your dad's soul and the sweet memories that you'll call on time after time in the future to keep him close. Kris, Wadsworth, OH

Oh Gina, I'm so so sorry to hear of your loss. I know what it means to lose a parent...not quite something anyone can explain until you experience it. It does sound like your Dad lived a great life, which is certainly carried on through you! You are the best at what you do.
We recently (in November) went through the whole Hospice Care Center process at the site in Fitchburg. If this is where you Father was...I can only say how much I understand how this one facility makes such a difference in the whole process! It just gives me chills to remember. What amazing people working in this facility...
If you plan to do anything to commemorate them... I volunteer to help!
Take care of yourself and your Mom. Life is very precious!
Big Hugz,
Mary (your neighbor!)

Gina, your post made me reflect back nearly three years ago when I spent the last night of my mom's life here on earth by her side. Like my mom your father is now living without pain and has joined the angels in heaven that guide us here on earth. It is true what Hospice told you some people wait until their loved one leaves the room before passing on. This happened with my grandma - all 4 daughters arrived from 4 different states and when they went to sleep she passed after saying her good-byes, even without speaking. Also my father-in-law did the same thing when my daughters went to visit him in the hospital - when they went down the hall to get something to drink he passed on. God works in mysterious ways. Hold close all your loving memories of him - they will give you comfort going forward.

Gina-I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. This has been a really tough year for my family also, at times I wonder how we will get through it. My mother passed away on Halloween. My father in law passed away in June. My Mother in law just passed on January 20th. It is hard for an adult, but my kids. All their Grandparents within a very short time, is a lot to handle. My Mother in law was also in Hospice and waited for that one moment when we all had left the room. Please know that others feel you pain and are thinking of you at this time. Hugs, Christine G.

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. On January 5th my Mom passed. She had been suffering from Alzheimer's and had struggled for some time. Her earthly journey is over but she is now whole again and beginning a new journey. Thank you for your sharing about cremation, my Dad did not have that wonderful image and decided against it for my Mom. My prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Gina,
My heart just aches for you. My deepest sympathies to you and your family. Thank you for sharing your dad's story. He sounds like a greatly talented man who lead a very long and rewarding life. Try not to be too upset that you weren't there at the time of his death. That's the way he wanted it. If you would have been there, he would have waited until you left. I work in Hospice and I've seen and heard many stories to that testimony. Take comfort in the fact that you spent the night before with him and how much that meant to him. When the treasure becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

Gina, my heart aches for you and your family. My dad passed away 3 years ago this January. He was 87 and yet I feel as if his time with us wasn't long enough. And reading your message gave me chills, tears, and that burning ache in the throat. I sat at my computer and cried for you, but also I realized I was crying again for myself. Time does heal as they say, and as the days pass you'll have these flashes and lapses but then again you'll find the little messages all around you that your dad is still there with you. Just watch for them - a special song, a special image, a special number... they're there when you least expect it. Know that he's right by your side still loving you and your family and his wife. He's the angel riding with you in the car; there at special holidays, there in the silence of the night. Always watching over you; guiding you even still. Take it one day at a time... and God Bless.

So sorry to hear of your loss. You're right, your Dad is in a better place where there's no pain at all. I know how you feel - we lost our mother too a year ago but up to this time, I still think of her. I am very far from my family (me being here in Hawaii and them in the Philippines)and never did spent that much time with my mother. Our prayers are with you and your family. Take care and hugs to you and to your Mom.

Gina, I am so sorry, truly. I lost my sweet grandmother on Jan. 2nd, and I wasn't ready to let her go, but she wanted it, to see her husband, and her daughter, and I miss her soooo much. There is nothing I can say to make you feel any better, or make the pain any less, but I know that you will find comfort and peace in your memories. Just know that when you close your eyes in the sunshine, and feel the breeze blow or the warmth of the sun on your face, that he is there. I am sure that he was so proud of you, and lived a beautiful life, and it seems as though he passed on some pretty amazing characteristics to you and your girls. Take care of yourself, you all will be in my prayers.

After a bout with CHF (congestive heart failure) I'm just now reading all my e-mail. I was shocked & saddened to learn of your Dad's passing. What a wonderful & multi-talented man he sounds like! A man of many talents. Above all he was a very lucky man in that his daughter felt so much love for him and showed him every chance she got! May the Lord bless you, your Dad, and the rest of your family!!!

Dear Gina, You are so correct in what you posted. He can see you and your children now, hear them giggling and watch over you now. He is in peace, in a much better place, not just for him, but for you, too. I am quite sure it will be difficult at first, but just remember you will see him again soon enough.
Please know that we will all be here when you feel up to coming back at 'full steam ahead'... Until then, be with your family, where you should be. We will be praying for you and yours.
May God wrap his loving arms around you to remind you just how wonderful of a daughter you are to have spent as much time as you did with your dad! With Sympathy, Nicole

Gina, I haven't responded right away, because I needed a little time, or so I thought! It's just as hard now, so here goes. My heart is with you. I am still trying to get over losing my dear Dad last July 18th, at the age of 95. I was not as fortunate as you, to have been there with him. They live down in VA & I'm up in MA. I did have my sister hold the phone up to his ear, even though he was deaf as could be, but I know he heard me at some level. I told him how much I loved him & that he was the best Dad ever. I told him it was OK to go. I am bawling my eyes out as I type.
I just wanted to share that with you, Gina. Be thankful you were there up till the end. Like the Hospice nurse said, he didn't want you to watch him die. What a loving father till the very end.
I have to go now, can't keep typing, but hope you are healing more & more each day. Lots of love...

Gina & family - Our prayers for your strength are endless. I went through this same thing with my Mother nearly 5 years ago (as of 3/19) and it is not easy. The Hospice Angels are right, our parents do not want us to see them pass away. My Mom did the same thing. But for all she taught me in life, she taught me more in her dying - to be strong, to be unafraid and to believe there is a far better life to go to. One without pain and suffering and one where you can go to wait in comfort and joy, for those you love. Be strong Gina and know that one day you will be reunited with the first man you ever loved - your father.

Gina, My heart truly goes out to you in the loss of your father. I recently lost my Dad about 2 1/2 months ago. He died of a massive heart attack at the young age of 64 years. He was the joy of my life. I was his only daughter and my life will never be the same. I saw him a week before he died, he was feeling perfectly and I never dreamed that I would never see his smiling face or feel his hug again on the earth. I only know that Heaven gained a great man the day he died. He left behind 8 grandsons and 1 granddaughter-that will miss him terribly. It is truly a comforting thing to know that they (your dad and mine) are happy, healthy and whole today and looking down on us each and every day.

My condolence on the loss of your father. I work for Hospice in Fdl, WI and I agree with the Hospice nurse that your father waited until you left to continue his journey in eternity. Hold on to the night he gave you to be with him and feel the warmth of his body and touch. The next time you look up and see a star in the sky, please remember this.
Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but openings where our loved can let us know that they are happy, free from pain and are watching over you.
Blessings to you and your family

Gina, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my daddy to Cancer almost 17 yrs ago, when he was only 47. Watching him go through that was the hardest thing ever, as you know all too well. When he passed, I took comfort in knowing that he was no longer in pain. I hope you can keep focus on that, too, and of all the good times you shared. It sounds like he was an incredible daddy, and you were one lucky girl. I'm glad you got to spend the night before with him, and I would believe the nurse's words and be thankful he spared you the pain of his actual passing. I did get to see my daddy go, and wished I had been spared. But like you, I spent the night before with him. After a couple of weeks of not knowing who we were, he, for a change, was in his right mind, and we talked, remembered and reminisced, laughed, and shared. Afterwards, he said he was so tired and just wanted to rest, and he never woke up. I will always treasure that last night with him, as I know you will treasure your last night with your dad, too. Hold on to the good memories, and they will help you through the painful moments of missing him. You and your family are in my prayers. I pray you find comfort in your memories, and in God's mercy and love.

Gina,
What a beautiful tribute to your father... I just lost my Mom a month ago and I am still devasted. There is nothing like the pain or the enormous hole in your heart from losing a parent. My Mom died suddenly and was my best friend... it is a terrible "club" to be in... I saw your tribute from a splitcoaststampers link. My Mom and I stamped all the time and she was even my downline for SU. I am so grateful to have had that bond that gave us many hours of laughter, enjoyment and love we shared for stamps and eachother. I pray God sends you peace to help ease your pain, as I know your heart is breaking... God Bless You... From a fellow stamper in Missouri

I just read of you Dad's passing. First let me say to you my heart and prayers go out to your family. I believe things happen for a reason and I believe I was supposed to have read your blog today. I have had a pretty tough day. Today is my Mom's BDay. She passed away 9 yrs ago. My father passed away a year and half ago from cancer. When he passed we inherited his dog, his best bud, "Little Bit" who has given us great joy. Today had to put her to sleep due to cancer. So today kind of stinks. Your blog brightened my day. With both our parents, we did not make it there to be with them. After reading your post, I now know why Mom and Dad chose to go without us being there. They, too, would not want to see us upset. I want you to know, even while you are in the midst of your loss, you (and your dad) have lifted the spirits of a complete stranger. God Bless. I shall keep you and yours in my prayers.

I am very sorry to hear about you Dad's passing... I just lost my Father 3 weeks ago... Similar to your Dad, mine was also very sick, he struggled for many years... However; I cannot know what you are going through because we are all very different and feel differently... It would really upset me when people would say, "I know how you feel." because they didn't know how I felt... 1 minute I was sad, the next angry, and the next happy for him, that he was free often within a few seconds of each other... Every night since he passed away I have dreamt of him, but last night for the first time, I dreamt that he was gone, and it bothered me... I'm guess that like me, you are wondering when the pain will go away, and I really wish I knew... I do have a new outlook though "I have good minutes, and bad minutes. Eventually they will become hours, then become days, onto weeks, and finally occasions"... I know it will never go away, but I do think it will get better, and easier... I want to also share a thought that my best friend shared with me... Don't hold back anything, if you are sad, then cry, if you are mad, then yell. Don't let anyone tell you how you should be feeling or dealing. And do not let anyone take away your emotions, it is those emotions that will help you heal...
I hope this helps you a bit at this time, even though I do not know you or have ever spoken with you before... Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers...
If you need someone to talk to, I am here... perhaps we can help each other...
Jason

the Lord Jesus Christ, the best is yet to be for us all. You and your family are in my prayers.

Gina,
We all love our Dads...I can tell yours was very, very special to you. My Dad passed away a couple of years ago in an auto accident, I was 53 and being the oldest had to be the strongest (I thought). It was hard for me to grieve and I held it in. Over time little things remind me of him and 'my' loss. I've cried a few times and it's helped. Reading your post about your Dad being in the arms of Christ opened a river of tears for me and I truely appreciate it. Grieving comes hard for me and everytime I can just give way to the feelings, it helps. Thank you so much for the wonderful tribute to your Dad.

Gina,
I wanted to let you know how truly sorry I am for your loss. I too lost my father from cancer November 2007. The memories of our last month together are priceless. Hold onto those close times you shared with him. I will have you in my prayers because I do know what you are going through. With Love, Julie Crossley

"Yesterday at 5:00 PM, my Dad's eyes were finally opened, his ears could finally hear again. His body was young and strong....and he was enveloped in the arms of Christ. "
Gina, that gave me chills because it made me realize that in the twinkling of an eye we will be transformed and free! My heart is just filled with wonder and excitement to know that your dad has been welcomed home, and I know that you find comfort in that as well. It will probably be all you have to hold onto for a while. Thanks for sharing your bittersweet account of your dad's life. He sounds amazing...a comedian, an Olympic athlete, a craftsman....amazing! Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree
Hugs and prayers,
Connie

What a precious last-night you were so blessed to spend with your Daddy. God is good to know just what we need here on earth and what he needed before he went home to his Father in Heaven. YOu will always be his littl girl and one day you will see him again just as God promised. My prayers are with you and my God be your great comforter.
